About Nyayo Discovery

Nyayo Discovery is a social enterprise that specialises in creating authentic, culturally immersive experiences with indigenous peoples, safaris, and adventure activities in Tanzania for youth adventure travellers.

Nyayo Discovery is inspired by the Tanzanian and South African philosophies of Ujamaa (the importance of community) and Ubuntu (“I am because you are”). We are all connected and interdependent, and our vision is a more curious, empathetic, and sustainable industry and world.

As a company that believes in maximum direct benefits for communities, Nyayo Discovery also recognises the volatile nature of tourism. It invests up to 10% of its net profit with its community partners, which is put towards non-tourism related projects including small business ventures, education, health, and environmental conservation and regeneration.

Key highllights and takeaways from WYSTC 2024
  • Meeting so many new and interesting people with a specific focus on youth travel.
  • WYSTC is very much set up to promote relationship-building and networking, so even if you don’t have a stand, you’re still as likely to make some great contacts and generate business.
  • One clear takeaway is how relatively undervalued and under-represented youth travel is in our country, with such a heavy focus on low-volume luxury travel geared towards national parks and beach holidays. This is something that needs to change, as youth can potentially be a real force for economic equity, conservation, and sustainability in the travel sector in developing countries.
  • Thanks to the insights provided by speakers, Nyayo Discovery can move forward with more confidence that we’re on the right track, together with a clearer idea of where and how we can improve our business.
Thoughts on the WYSE Up programme

“There is clear intent behind the WYSE Up programme. It’s not just a box-ticking exercise with the offer to attend a trade fair. Including a two-year WYSE Travel Confederation membership along with mentorship shows real thought has gone into how WYSE can give smaller operators the best chance at success.

As grants go, the WYSE Up programme is generous. One of the biggest obstacles for smaller operators attending trade fairs is covering the cost of travel and accommodation. Having flights and accommodation covered (including two meals a day) helped a lot. When I’ve mentioned the programme to others in the industry, a common response is disbelief, followed by ‘When does an opportunity like that ever happen?!’ Well, it happens with WYSE Up!”

Key highllights and takeaways from WYSTC 2024
  • WYSTC 2024 far exceeded my expectations in value, content, and networking opportunities.
  •  As a South African based founder and small business owner rebuilding the business post COVID, the topics on the programme were invaluable in seeing opportunities to scale the business in the youth sector in the mid-to-long term.
  •  The speakers and breakaway sessions provided insights and takeaways that either validated our journey and experience or provided takeaways that we could immediately apply.
  • The vibrant and welcoming energy from organisers and participants stood out for me as well.
  • I had the realisation that there is a gap in what buyers are looking for in volunteering programmes in Africa versus the need in underserved communities, i.e. sustainable economic opportunities or skills. Significant impact has been achieved through wildlife and school projects; however, I believe that volunteers have the potential to transform some of Africa’s rural villages
Thoughts on the WYSE Up programme

“The WYSE Up programme gave me the opportunity to attend the WYSTC 2024 conference and connect with buyers and industry professionals who are integral to the growth of our business. Our small business would not have afforded this opportunity without the WYSE Up grant.”
