United Through Sport was founded in 2004 and ever since then has been sending thousands of volunteers overseas every year to help make a difference in disadvantaged communities. Starting with sports coaching and teaching projects in South Africa, United Through Sport has now expanded with projects in Argentina, the Caribbean, Ghana, Mauritius and more.

1. What was the original inspiration behind starting United Through Sport in 2004?

United Through Sport began in South Africa when our founders, on their own gap year, volunteered in local communities coaching sport. They were struck by the children’s enthusiasm, talent, and spirit despite scarce resources. What started as two privileged young men “giving back” soon flipped—they found themselves gaining immense joy and fulfilment. They realised the double impact: disadvantaged children benefiting from support in sport and education, while young volunteers experienced personal growth and improved wellbeing. That powerful model became our foundation, and 20 years later we continue to thrive in South Africa and beyond, now active in several countries worldwide.

2. What makes you stand out from your competitors?

We are a registered charity in the UK and in each country where we operate, ensuring our programmes have deep, lasting impact. Travellers who join United Through Sport contribute not just to daily activities but to the wider development of the communities we serve. This creates a genuine sense of purpose and contribution. Our focus extends beyond sport to health, education, and employment—supporting both children and youth in disadvantaged communities and the international volunteers who join us. From mental and physical wellbeing to pathways into work, we help all participants grow, thrive, and unlock new opportunities.

3. How do you build trust and relationships with local communities before starting a new project?

With over 20 years of consistent work in local communities, we have built strong trust by keeping our primary focus on delivering quality developmental programmes that truly benefit local people. This community-first approach has created deep, lasting relationships and ensures our initiatives are welcomed and impactful. Interestingly, this also enhances the experience for our international volunteers—because when communities trust and value the programmes, volunteers are able to engage more meaningfully, creating richer, more rewarding exchanges for everyone involved.

4. What can a first-time volunteer expect when they arrive at one of your projects?

We pride ourselves on offering exceptional support for our volunteers. Each location has live-in staff available 24/7, ensuring guidance and care whenever it’s needed. On arrival, participants receive a comprehensive induction, followed by a structured weekly timetable that balances meaningful community work with clear direction. To enrich the overall experience, we also organise additional weekend activities, giving volunteers the chance to explore, enjoy leisure time, and engage with local culture. This balance of support, structure, and adventure ensures every volunteer gains maximum impact and enjoyment from their time with us.

5. How do you envision your impact growing over the next five years?

Our flagship programme in South Africa employs over 60 local staff and supports more than 12,000 community beneficiaries through sport-based health, education, and employment initiatives. Our vision is to expand our satellite programmes in other countries to achieve similar impact, creating meaningful opportunities for both local communities and young people. To reach this goal, we aim to build strong partnerships with a select network of trusted agents worldwide, ensuring a consistent flow of international volunteers to our programmes in Argentina, Ghana, Mauritius, Saint Lucia and South Africa. Their contribution is vital to sustaining and growing the life-changing programmes we deliver on the ground.
