What inspired the creation of FurtherTravel, and how did the idea for youth-focused travel experiences originate?

FurtherTravel was founded with a mission to create life-changing travel experiences for young people, built around meaningful cultural exchange and community impact. Recognising the growing desire among Gen Z to explore the world with purpose, we sought to offer trips that go beyond sightseeing, combining adventure with responsible volunteering, conservation, and personal growth. Our goal is to empower young travellers to connect with new cultures while contributing positively to the destinations they visit.

How do you ensure safety and support for young travellers, especially first-time solo travellers?

Safety and support are at the core of everything we do. Our experienced local teams and trusted in-country partners provide 24/7 ground support, while our UK-based team guides travellers from their first enquiry to post-trip follow-up. For many, it’s their first time travelling solo, so we prioritise accessibility, reassurance, and community. From destination advice to packing tips, our team and alumni community help build confidence at every step of the journey.

How do you choose volunteer opportunities and ensure they’re responsible and ethical?

We take a careful, collaborative approach to selecting volunteer opportunities. All programmes are reviewed against best-practice guidelines and shaped in partnership with local organisations to ensure they’re community-led and sustainable. We prioritise initiatives with demonstrable long-term impact and avoid activities that risk harm or dependency. Ongoing dialogue with local partners helps us improve these experiences continually for the benefit of both travellers and the communities they support.

What advice do you have for young people who are nervous about travelling abroad for the first time?

It’s completely normal to feel nervous; travel can be a big leap. But often, the most rewarding experiences begin with that first step outside your comfort zone. Our advice?
