Welcome to our newest member – Euro Hostels

Oct 24, 2018

Interview with Rosanna Burns – Scotland Manager

Tell us your story. How did Euro Hostels get started?

Euro Hostels was founded in 2000, Glasgow was our first hostel and due to the success of this we continued to grow now having hostels in Newcastle, Liverpool and a summer hostel in Edinburgh. Euro Hostel’s aim was to bridge the gap between budget hotels and backpacker hostels. Our Managing Director – William McClelland took on the challenge in 2002 and has year on year continued to grow and expand Euro Hostels to be the product it is today, bringing in new and exciting developments each year to better the customer experience.

What makes Euro Hostels different from your competitors?

Euro Hostels chose to trade as a hostel purely due to the customer having the choices that traditional hotels do not offer. We are what we are, great hostels right in the centre of some of the best cities in the UK, with a range of private rooms, VIP suites and beds in shared dorms to suit all types of travellers. We are not corporate or branded, our hostels are as unique as our cities.

What is your favourite success story from your organisation?

Great question, after 12 years within Euro Hostels there have been too many highlights to mention them all; however, one year that stands out from the rest would be 2015. Within this year, we created our VIP Suites Product in Glasgow creating 7 new suites. These suites are one of a kind providing great accommodation along with lounge space and even a secret garden! October 2015 brought the arrival of our fabulous Liverpool hostel with a great 250 bed capacity. Liverpool was a great addition to the Euro Hostel family.

What can we expect to see from Euro Hostels in the future?

As a group, Euro Hostels strive daily to give the best experience possible to every guest. Customer demand is growing rapidly, we plan on ensuring we remain at the top. Euro Hostel owners are always striving to expand and develop so who knows…watch this space.

Which trends do you see in educational and active youth travel?

Educational and active youth travel is certainly on the up, Euro Hostels looks after many groups from all parts on the world. These groups visit Scotland and the North of England during trips such as Exchange College/University visits, we see this as a fantastic opportunity for the students to broaden their horizons and discover different cultures whilst also gaining a hostel experience.

How do you work to ensure the health and safety of young travellers involved with Euro Hostels?

Euro Hostels will never compromise on Health & Safety/guest safety and this is very present with our excellent standards. In turn, this gives students, groups, solo travellers, etc. the confidence to stay with us time and time again.

What was your motivation to join WYSE Travel Confederation?

Joining WYSE was a ‘no brainer’ for Euro Hostels, being part of the WYSE platform not only allows us to network with other accommodation providers it also provides invaluable information/guidance on youth travel.

Have you attended a WYSE Travel Confederation event? If so, what was your experience with the event?

We sure have! We attended WYSTC in Edinburgh this year and have also signed up for STAY WYSE in January 2019. The Edinburgh event was extremely successful, Euro Hostels got their name out there to people that had the “hostel” fear. It is important that Euro Hostels gets the chance to show that the word “hostel” is not only about a shared dorm bed, it is actually so much more, from dorm beds to private rooms and VIP Suites.

What is an industry challenge your organisation is facing at this time?

The accommodation market has changed drastically since we opened our first Euro Hostel in 2000, there are so many new providers appearing each year that the challenge to stay one step ahead is very difficult! This being said; Euro Hostels offers such a unique experience and really can cater for each and every type of guest that we are confident we can smash it!
