Meet our newest member: Ostello Bello

May 4, 2018

Interview with Federico Scotti, Hostel Manager

Tell us your story. How did Ostello Bello get started?

Ostello Bello was started in 2011 by a group of three friends. The aim was to give to the city of Milan a place where travellers could feel like guests in a friend’s house. We love to think of our hostels as a real life social network.

What makes Ostello Bello different?

Ostello Bello stands out among the regular hospitality facilities by providing rounded services that allow its guests to live the best experience the destination has to offer. The notable thing about Ostello Bello is that the hostel is also a bar which is open to local people, and it hosts many events like live music, comedy shows, and book presentations in an international environment.

What is your favourite success story from your organisation?

We are very proud of all the awards we’ve received since our adventure began in 2011. Maybe the one closest to our hearts is the Ambrogino d’oro, a recognition given by Milan’s city council to those who impact the local community in a positive manner and highlight the city’s prestige.

What can we expect to see from Ostello Bello in the future?

To find more of the right people and more of the right places in order to keep opening homes away from home all around the world.

Which trends do you see in educational and active youth travel?

We perceive the market shifting towards a new direction that we are extremely excited about. More people, of all ages, backgrounds and interests are setting off to explore the world, and we love being a part of their adventure. With the help of technology we are witnessing more young travellers setting off on their own, both for educational and active travels. The availability of safe, fun and social spaces such as Ostello Bello, where young people can bond and learn about different cultures, allows more and more people to easily access these life changing experiences.

Which challenges do you see in educational and active youth travel?

The main challenge that affects all kinds of travel is safety, which we work hard to provide for our guests. We want our guests to enjoy their stay, and feeling safe is the most important feature of any trip.

We fear that today’s youth is afraid of travelling outside of their comfort zone. Beyond the classical concept of safety, their fear seems to be tied to the lack of control that travel inevitably brings along with the adventures. We want to be the trampoline from which today’s youth isn’t afraid to jump and start discovering the world.

What support/safety is provided for young people going to your properties?

From the moment our guests book their room, to the time they check out, we provide all rounded services that allow a safe and happy travel experience. 24 hour reception, elctronic keys to access both building and rooms, lockers and pad locks are just a few of the amenities we provide.

What was your motivation to join WYSE Travel Confederation?

We are excited to be part of a rich network, hosting the best of the travel industry.

In 2015, we opened Ostello Bello Grande, a hostel located near Central Station, which had the same concept but was much bigger. In 2017 we opened Ostello Bello Lake Como a vibrant hostel located in front of the beautiful Lake Como. For several years, Ostello Bello has won HostelWorld’s award for ‘Italy’s Best Hostel’, and in 2017 Ostello Bello Grande won the award for HostelWorld’s ‘Best Large Hostel in the World’.
