Topdeck Travel  has carried out a wide-ranging survey with some interesting if random findings.

More than 30,000 people took part in the survey. The proportion of female respondees came in at 87%; Australians and Canadians accounting for 39% and 25% respectively; nearly three-quarters of the sample said they were between 18 and 24 years old; and not all participants answered every question.

With a strong gender and age bias, it’s difficult to gauge how relevant the findings are in a wider travel context. For example, hostels come out as the most favoured accommodation option, with friends the preferred travelling companion, absolutely in line with what one might predict given the sample’s make-up.

On the other hand, traditional travel agents come out better than might have been expected with one in five (21%) using an agent to book their trip.

Regular wifi access is widely seen as a millennial must-have, but only averaged 6.24 out of 10 in terms of its importance to travellers. The idea that millennials are constantly on social media is also blown out of the water, with only 23% updating their account once a day – the majority – 59% – do so a few times a week.
